Artist Statement
Redline is a series of oil paintings depicting characters engaging their thresholds: playfully, boldly, submissively, defiantly, diligently, fervently, with agility or reticence, each calling you into their moment of subjectivity…
The inspiration for exploring imaginary thresholds in the paintings is an exploration of the Shaman’s moment of crossing into liminal states, invoking inevitable, irreversible transformation. Each of these figures are at their own precipices.
So you may ask:
“What line is being drawn, trespassed, surpassed; why would it matter?”
“What inhibition, transformation, transgression, or dilemma is implied?”
The restricted palette of ultramarine blue and ochre-gold holds the series in elemental conversation; and spirited figures pre-empt a multitude of subjectivities, just before they accumulate unconscious bias.
The Redline series embraces these constraints to deliberately push the limits of unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, towards conscious competence. Painting as experimental learning and unlearning, failing forward, while forever remaining engrossed in creative practice; committing to mark making, brushwork, blends of mediums and building palettes with varying values and tonal intensities, so the paint makes the forms through which the characters emerge.
