About the artist
Hello, I’m Patricia Watson, an artist working in South Africa.
My life is a constant reinvention: I’m a storyteller, comic edutainer, learning designer, curious intellectual, business owner, academic, career bureaucrat, and a servant of desire. Painting is pure pleasure.
Often described as quirky, my oil paintings capture fragments of the human condition at imaginary thresholds of consciousness, provoking introspection and ancestral conversations.
Through painting I remain engrossed in creative practice; committing to mark making, brushwork, blends of mediums and building palettes with varying values and tonal intensities, so the paint makes the forms through which meaning emerges.
I am committed to mark-making as a daily practice in which I deliberately push the limits of unconscious incompetence and conscious incompetence towards conscious competence. Remaining forever in the present to release my creative spirit.
In 2021, at the age of 54, I renegotiated with the universe for my artist-self to have more time, beginning the process of establishing a creative practice for an exhibition at the Stokvel Gallery, in September 2023 which sold out. The popularity of the work led to online sales and a limited edition of digital works. In March 2024, my digital artworks are on exhibit in a group show at the Vision24 Generations Art Fair in Kommetjie, Cape Town, along with thirty other esteemed artists.
What is Stokvel Gallery
Stokvel Gallery is the brainchild of Gordon Froud: owner of GordArt Gallery: artist, teacher, intellectual, and curator extraordinaire. Stokvel Gallery is a space that supports collective reinvention – it is a space for artists run by artists – it’s ubuntu for creatives who pool resources and inspiration. I’m forever grateful for the deadline that propelled me across the line to host my first solo show.
What is Vision24 Generations Art Fair
This is the first artist-led art fair in South Africa, coordinated by Susan Proctor Hume of sphfineart. The thirty artists on exhibit, each have their own booths, exhibiting paintings, photographs, sculptures, ceramics and digital prints.
What is a digital print?
A digital print is a series of prints that is created by the artist in a digital format repeated to the series number. The series once sold is then closed and it becomes one of the chosen number that will only be printed and no further prints are made thereafter.
